We are part of an amazing community of faith in the Archdiocese of Detroit. For decades, our Catholic schools have served as a model of academic excellence, as well as personal and spiritual growth. Be a good student, develop in faith, attend college. While this model has served Catholic school communities well, we believe that there is more we can do to prepare our students for the world ahead. We believe our students can be more and that they should be given the tools to choose their own pathway to excellence.

Self-Advocacy
We believe that if given permission, students will advocate for what they want in their school, take on leadership roles, and positions of responsibility. We believe that in a world filled with CHOICES, the most important thing we can teach our students is How and Why their choices matter.
Developing and Demonstrating Abilities
Even the most gifted of students need to develop the skills to practice their gifts. ALL students at OLL will complete an annual CAPSTONE project. Additionally, a focus on students demonstrating daily that they are learning, and developing the skills necessary to succeed in whatever comes next in life.

Student-Centered Flexible Daily Schedule
Our students will experience core subjects, have AP courses, dual enrollment, and electives available. We believe that these are the foundation of a strong educational institution. Where we set ourselves apart, is that we empower our students and staff to make the most of the time they are given. With student led organizations and clubs, students will choose where to focus, what to attend, and learn to maximize their time in our building.
College and Real-World Readiness
Students are not one dimensional and as educators our mission must not be either. We strive for academic excellence, but also personal discipline. We will provide students the tools needed to attend the nations top colleges, or if they choose, expanding their understanding and skill set in the trades.

Christian Service Experiences Replace Christian Service Hours
We believe strongly in serving humanity in the model of Jesus Christ. Tabulating this service into hours turns what is otherwise a meaningful experience into a task, which often resembles less the acts of Jesus and more a thing that a nice or helpful person might do. We will encourage and support our students in engaging in true acts of charity and discipleship. We will not count how long these events last, but rather present opportunities each year for our students to participate in meaningful acts of service.

Social Value Projects to Improve Our World
We strive to educate the whole child. While attending Our Lady of the Lakes, our students will learn to value the community and serve others in ways that benefit their classmates, their school, and the world. They are encouraged to work as mentors to students of all grade levels, engage in projects that beautify our campus, and to find a way to bring something of true value into the world.

Real World Experiences
Upperclassmen will have the option to work within our campus through our internship program. Students have the opportunity to work alongside our staff in various roles on campus. Students learn life skills, time management, and personal responsibility.

Finding a Problem in the World and Solving It
Students are often told what to learn and how to learn it. They are given data sets to memorize and a set of skills to practice. While this has its place in academics, we encourage our students to find and experience problem solving firsthand. All students at OLL will pick a problem they view on campus or in the world around them and work all year on a solution to that problem. They will analyze the factors in and around this issue, develop multiple scenarios, and settle on a proposal. This may include inventing a tool, forming an organization, or utilizing government or social avenues of progress. Staff mentors will work with students to develop the skills necessary, culminating in their senior Capstone. The senior Captstone should be clear, measurable, and actionable.

Re-imagining the Purpose of the School Day
The best learning is done face to face with our teachers and students engaging in meaningful interactions. However, asking teachers, and students for that matter, to make each uniform class period in every subject "meaningful" is impossible. The solution is not simple, but the idea behind it is. Teachers will teach classes for the length of time required to make those subjects meaningful. All subjects will maintain a regular weekly schedule with ample time for active instruction. Students and teachers will be able to meet during flex time to expand upon instructional material, host study sessions, or collaborate with one another.
